5 Simple Ways to Make Journaling Feel Less Intimidating
Share
A lot of people want to start journaling, but end up feeling stuck because they think every page needs to be deep, meaningful, or perfectly written.
It doesn’t.
Journaling can be simple, messy, creative, organized, emotional, aesthetic, random — whatever you need it to be.
If staring at a blank page feels overwhelming, here are a few easy ways to make journaling feel more natural:
1. Start with lists
Not every journal entry has to be paragraphs.
Try writing:
- things currently on your mind
- goals for the week
- favorite moments from the day
- things you want to remember
- small wins
- current favorites
Sometimes lists are the easiest way to begin.
2. Romanticize the routine a little
You’re more likely to journal consistently if it feels enjoyable.
Light a candle, make coffee, play music, decorate the page, or sit somewhere cozy. Tiny rituals can make journaling feel less like a task and more like a moment for yourself.
3. Don’t wait until you have something “important” to say
Some of the best journal entries are about ordinary things:
- a thought you had during the day
- a conversation you keep replaying
- something that inspired you
- a goal you’re working toward
- how your week is going
You don’t need a life crisis to fill a page.
4. Your journal doesn’t need to look perfect
Messy handwriting, crossed-out words, uneven spacing — none of it matters.
A journal is meant to be used, not performed.
5. Make it yours
There’s no “correct” way to journal.
Some people write long entries. Some decorate pages with stickers and washi tape. Some use prompts. Some only journal once a week.
The best journaling routine is the one that feels natural enough to actually keep coming back to. 🤍
